The world of insurance can be a confusing place for those who haven't been in it before. What may appear on the surface to be a good option for coverage turns into hidden-fee heaven; of course, in reality there are no hidden fees. Rather, those who are met with these fees simply don't know much about them.

In California, where the size of the state is rivaled only by its diversity, insurance is a hot topic. With the cost of coverage rising and options increasing, consumers need to know which product will be the best for them and their loved ones. Click on a plan below to learn more about the coverage and benefit options:

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO): This plan requires patients to choose a primary-care physician. Most services are covered by a small co-pay, and is thus the most affordable of the plan types. Its emphasis is on preventive care.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO): With this plan, consumers can choose their own physician, whether in or out of the insurer's network; however, those who pick doctors who are out of the network pay more for basic services. This plan has a deductible as well. This plan is the best for those who need the freedom to choose their care-givers.

Self-Directed Health Plan (SDHP): One of many newer consumer-driven plans, this policy gives subscribers the ultimate freedom to choose any doctor and how much to spend on health care; they cover preventive and basic care, and are often combined with a high-deductible PPO.

Health Savings Account (HSA): This insurance plan works with a “high deductible health plan.” Members place a yearly medical contribution in a tax-advantaged savings account, which is then drawn upon when a medical needs arise. What is not used is then carried to the next year. This plan is best for those who can budget their medical coverage.

Point-of-Service (POS): Most POS plans do not require enrollees to meet a deductible; also, although they are free to choose any doctor they wish, they will also foot the bill for an out-of-network doctor. Almost like a “pay-as-you-go” plan, it is good for those who don't want to pay for coverage they may not use.

Fee-for-Service (Indemnity): After paying a yearly deductible, enrollees pay a portion of every visit or procedure with this plan, which covers hospital or catastrophic care.

Prescription benefits: In California, more and more people are receiving comprehensive coverage that already contains drug benefits; for those who don't have insurance or whose company doesn't cover prescriptions, there are prescription add-ons that can be included for a small monthly fee.

Small Business Health Insurance: In California, small business owners can buy either an individual or a group policy for their employees. In addition, they can begin an HSA for themselves or their workers.
