So, what is going on with California health insurance right now?  There are great people who are really trying to make a difference, and truly care about the people in this state- and it shows.  One such person is Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi.  He seems to enjoy his position helping people, and he is regularly in the news keeping Californians informed every step of the way. 

What exactly has the commissioner been doing?  Here are some recent news examples:

• In August 2005, Garamendi announced that health care in California needed to be reformed immediately because it was in danger of failing.  A report called “Priced Out” stated that rising insurance costs were making it difficult for individuals and employers to afford insurance.  Reports showed that 2,500 people were dying every year because they did not have health insurance, and employers were being crushed financially- weakening our economy.  The Commissioner has set some long-term goals to try to remedy the system.  Two of them include having “universal access to health care”- with pricing fair for everyone.
  
  
• In April 2006, Garamendi went after the Hartford Insurance Group- accused of charging $100 more per policy than the law allows.  He is seeking refunds for more than 4,700 policyholders.  Garamendi said, “Laws are intended to protect consumers against all types of fraud, and I intend to actively enforce them….”
