Family Insurance Options in California

Families are often offered the same coverage as those covered in groups, at a higher cost. Many employers will offer families a chance to enroll in an “employer-financed” HMO, which offers them a chance to be covered without the high cost of an individual plan. A PPO is a good choice for families because they have the freedom to choose their doctor, leaving room for the little ones to remain with the same pediatrician.

The Health Savings Account, a relatively new plan offered alongside a high-deductible PPO, is often another good choice for families. With an HSA, members can put money into a tax-advantaged savings account and draw money from the account as needed throughout the year to pay for medical costs. Similar to an IRA, the HSA rolls over each year, so that the remaining balance in the account is not lost.

Dental, vision and other “accessory” services are typically difficult for families to receive because these plans are often offered only on group policies; however, it is possible to receive a separate dental plan, or discounts on such services, through an family policy.

Some insurance companies offer supplemental insurance to cover things such as extended hospital stays and emergency services that traditional insurance just won't cover. they also provide benefits for individuals such as cancer coverage, disability and life insurance. Families who are need of temporary coverage, long-term care, disability benefits and accident insurance are often able to enroll through a large insurance company for relatively low premium costs.
